We are Rhode Island's top experts in wildlife and raccoon control. We are not a typical Providence raccoon control or pest control company. We don't treat wild animals like insects, because they are not! You can't just use poison to get rid of them. You also can't just set a few traps on the ground and call it good. Each situation is unique. And remember, if you have raccoons living in your house, it is almost certainly a female with a litter of young inside. These juveniles must be removed by hand, or they will starve to death and die. And after they are gone, the entry holes into the house must be sealed with professional repairs. Unlike most Providence pest control, we focus on complete and permanent solutions, by following these steps:
- Inspect the entire house, ground to roof, and the attic
- Seal shut all entry areas with professional grade steel
- If in attic, we remove the baby raccoons by hand
- Technical and human raccoon trapping appropriate to situation
- When necessary, we clean raccoon droppings and replace insulation
Providence Raccoon Control Tip: Is There a Way to Keep Raccoons Out of My Garden?
There is nothing more frustrating than spending your entire summer nurturing a garden only to find that a raccoon has been eating your prize pumpkins, lettuce, carrots, berries, or other crops. It can be incredibly frustrating as you watch all of your hard work go to waste. These raccoons have ruined your summer, as you will not enjoy your watermelon, cantaloupe, or lettuce. How incredibly frustrating is that?
Whether you have had this happen to you before or you are starting your own garden now, you may be looking for methods that can assist you to protect your garden. In essence, you are wondering if there is a way to keep raccoons out of your garden?
Start with a Fence
One of the methods that many people use is to put chicken wire around the garden. To be honest, you might as well be sticking out an invitation that says, "Raccoons, eat here." This is not a practical way to stop raccoons from getting into your garden.
Instead, you need to put up a sturdy fence that is at least 6 feet tall and extends at least 12 inches below the surface of the ground. Raccoons have sharp claws and rugged pause, which makes it easy for them to dig under a fence. However, if you have placed your fence at least a foot below the surface and have buried it in well, including putting jagged rocks along the fence, you can stop the raccoon from getting in. The 6 foot tall fence makes it difficult for the raccoon to climb over the fence.
Repelling the CritterA fence is a great way to keep these animals away, but you may want to apply additional measures, one such method is the use of repellents, either homemade or commercial. Repellents use a chemical that is irritating to the raccoon. They will not come around because it irritates their sense of smell, driving them away.
There are many different commercial products available, but you can actually create your own. By boiling hot peppers in water and then spraying the solution around your garden, you can drive the raccoons away. The best part about this particular homemade remedy is that it does not pose a danger to your crops.
Light'Em Up
This is a particularly good method to use. Raccoons are nocturnal creatures, meaning that they forage at nighttime. They are afraid of light, so a well-placed light over your garden can be an effective tool.
However, just leaving a light on won't work. Instead, you should get a motion sensor that activates a light. As the raccoon approaches your fence line, it would activate the sensor which would turn on a very bright light. This will startle the raccoon, scaring it away.
These tips can be quite effective in helping you to protect your garden. Apply all three of them and you can be sure that by the end of summer you will be enjoying all of those crops you nurtured so lovingly.
